Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is professional teeth whitening?

A professional teeth whitening treatment involves dental grade bleaching solutions available to dental professionals.  The dental assistant will take an impression of your teeth to create the costume fitting bleaching trays.

Within a few days, the patient will be given the costume bleaching trays with instructions on how to proceed.  Within 6-8 days the patient will be seen for a bleaching check to determine the continual course of the treatment.

The bleaching process results in a much whiter and brighter benefit. It is important to have access to a professional for the best possible results without causing any issues.

Is it safe to whiten my teeth at home?

Home bleaching kits are safe, but they aren't nearly as reliable or effective as professional products. While you might have some whitening benefits, your teeth won't become as white as they will with a professional bleaching.

In some cases, home whitening kits can do more damage than good. The harsh bleaching chemicals can irritate sensitive gum tissue. If you get the solution on your gums or leave it on too long, your gums — and even teeth —  can become severely inflamed and sensitive. Plus if you don’t apply the solution carefully, it can leave your teeth unevenly colored and splotchy.

How do I keep my teeth white?

Once you have your teeth whitened by Dr. Barry you will want your fresh new smile to last as long as possible.  Keep your teeth white by brushing and flossing at least twice a day.  It is also helpful to brush after meals especially if you eat brightly colored foods, such as berries, tea, cola, coffee and red wine or avoid these foods to protect the brightness of your smile.

The patient should consider not smoking or quitting smoking, using a premium whitening toothpaste and getting dental cleanings twice a year. In some instances, medications can affect the color of your teeth.  Let Dr. Barry know about all medications you are taking even if they are over the counter varieties or dietary supplements.
